New style to what is becoming a classic genre
Another point and drag to attack game! These kinds of games are quickly
becoming one of my favorite style of game to play on the iOS, 2nd only
to TD games. I highly recommend trying one if you are new to the style.
Mystical Gem is an interesting turn for this genre. The RPG elements
are there, with leveling, jobs, and skill allocation; however, this game
only has four playable characters and four classes with three variations
each. As you level up you can switch between the variations to make
your four basic characters gain levels while increasing the job level
(Think FF4 and the crystal job system).
You will also gain "new" weapons as you get farther along, which seem to
open the new jobs for your party. Aside from the new jobs and slightly
different strength/weaknesses there is nothing to note for weapons.
There are also items that can be equipped to BUFF your team. You will
find them after battle and can purchase some with the money you obtain,
though I would save the money to open skills and level your teams armor.
The items are an element of strategy I never really took advantage of
too much.
The skills that can be gained vary for each team member. One member is
your healer, there is a tank, a shooter, and a mage. Again, each one
gets three forms, all of which are classic renditions of RPG style games
and will be familiar to veteran players. Players will find their
favorite unit and stick with that, as there is no real advantage to
switching most of them once youve leveled up a particular job with abilities you like.
The battle system is true to the drag to attack style mentioned earlier.
For players who have played Battleheart, this will be a familiar
fighting system.
The enemies are awkward looking. Some seem to be robot, others are odd
bipeds that remind me of a living mouser from the old-school Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles. There are unique bosses every few levels, too.
The graphics remind me of very early Playstation or Dreamcast games.
Blocky and colorful, nice enough to look at. Though, you will sometimes
wish you had something more up to date. Even if it were not polygons, I
think the game would be more fun with better graphics that were cell
shading or even just cartoons.
Overall, this is a fun game with a new feel for the genre (futuristic
rather than medieval). The game can be very tough sometimes, but you
will find some grinding goes a long way in helping you with that. Not
to mention farming the boss stages.
I recommend this game, highly. Despite the rudimentary graphics, I
think that its fanciful story and new take on the genre gives this game
a flavor that makes it worth the five star rating.
Have fun and Retrieve the Gem!
